Suicide prevention and response training programs often fail to fully address the unique needs and perspectives of Lived Experience Workforces. In Victoria, a training package that integrates the expertise of these workforces within clinical spaces, is needed, to support consistent approaches to suicide prevention and response that aligns with the Zero Suicide Framework (ZSF). Adoption of the ZSF across the state was a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, as was the need for increased Lived Experience leadership.

Safer Care Victoria responded to this opportunity by co-designing a suicide prevention and response training package specifically tailored for Lived Experience Workforces, ensuring that the training reflects their unique roles, expertise, and ways of working. Through an authentic co-design process, we identified the challenges faced by Lived Experience Workforces working in clinical settings, and the possibilities of doing things differently to improve suicide prevention and responses. A Consumer Lived Experience role was integral in leading the co-design process, guiding the collective action of upskilling the workforce. The resulting training package includes modules that promote Lived Experience Workforce techniques, human rights approaches, and practical skills, all framed within compassionate connections.

The development of this training package represents a meaningful advancement in suicide prevention strategies in Victoria. By integrating the unique insights of Lived Experience Workforces, the training aims to strengthen their role and increase effectiveness in preventing suicide. This presentation will benefit for those interested in Lived Experience Workforce training as well as those interested in broader training development. We will unpack the learnings and outcomes of this authentic co-designed work and share the learnings and next steps on this journey.
