Regional Initiative for Adult Male Suicide Prevention by Brisbane South PHN
Torque It Out: A Grassroots, Automotive-Based Approach
Abstract:
Brisbane South PHN region covers a large area south of the Brisbane River, including metropolitan, rural and remote island locations. The region is home to approximately 24% of the Queensland population, over 1.2 million people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Spanning 4 Local Government Areas including Logan, Redland, Brisbane and Scenic Rim, 223 suburbs covering 3,770 square kilometres, the largest PHN catchment in Queensland by population.
Brisbane South PHN undertook a needs analysis for suicide prevention programs in the area in early 2023. In this process the following data was highlighted:
Brisbane South PHN understood for any program to be effective within this cohort it would need to be developed in a locally-informed and community-based way. An open tender process was undertaken with a target audience of males aged between 25-49 years living in specified SA3 regions where the need was the greatest. Wheelnutz were the successful provider with their program Torgue it Out.
Torque It Out is an innovative, community-focused suicide prevention program located in South Brisbane. Torque It Out offers a unique, walk-in, no-appointment-needed mental health support service. Delivered within the familiar and non-clinical setting of an automotive workshop, the program provides immediate access to support, encouraging engagement from men who may be hesitant to seek help through traditional mental health services.
The program's grassroots approach leverages the workshop environment as a space where men feel comfortable, allowing for genuine, stigma-free conversations about mental health. This place-based model is designed to meet men where they are, fostering trust and creating an environment that feels relevant to their lived experiences. Importantly, Torque It Out integrates the voices and insights of peer support champions, many of whom have lived experience of suicidal behaviour, offering authenticity and empathy that resonate deeply with participants.
The program aligns with national suicide prevention strategies by addressing barriers to help-seeking, promoting early intervention, and building community resilience. It is a model that not only provides immediate support but also contributes to long-term cultural change around mental health in male-dominated spaces.
