Postvention is a critical yet ‘niche’ element of service delivery for mental health and community-based services. In Western Australia, there are many excellent examples of communities working together to support individuals, families and communities after a suspected suicide, in particular regional areas. Historically in the Perth Metropolitan region, there has been limited coordination of responses to suspected suicides, leaving government and non-government organisations working independently, rather than collaboratively, in responses to support people impacted or bereaved by suicide. After multiple suicides with similar methods and location in 2022/2023, key services providers came together to develop a plan to reduce further suicide deaths in this area. The positive outcome of this intervention resulted in the Mental Health Commission funding an initiative to develop a working group, aimed to develop collaborative approaches in responding to suspected suicides across the Perth metropolitan region. The working group developed the Metro Postvention Response Group (MPVRG) which utilises the “Circles of Vulnerability” model and requires government and non-government organisations to develop compressive action plans after a death by suspected suicide. Working together is pivotal to reduce duplication of servicing, exploring gaps in support, and ensuring everyone is working towards the same outcome. The MPVRG has been developed to work towards positive outcomes for people impacted and bereaved by suicide within the Perth metropolitan (inclusive of the Bindjareb region). This interactive presentation will allow participants to experience a response group meeting to showcase the benefits of working together in the postvention space and how everyone can contribute, and value add to this process.
