For three (3) years the National Mens Lived Experience of Suicide Network (NMLESN) has existed. The NMLESN was birthed out of need and necessity and an effort towards the 8-9 people who die by suicide everyday in Australia. Roses in the Ocean (RITO) and Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF) joined forces to create a space for those who identify as male and have a lived experience of suicide to connect with others.

My name is Tynan (RITO) and along with my buddy Jonathan (AMHF) we co-facilitate the network. The network exists to be a space mostly online for people to safely speak about their LE, build community with others and develop a sense of community. The network also holds something extremely unique. A collective voice of 120+ men who are interested in working with the suicide prevention sector, governments, research sector and anyone else interested in exploring what the LE voice can add.

Over the past three years the network has held over 100, online engagements in the form of a world first online safe space for men, interactive interview session, provided Lived Experience perspective’s frameworks, research topics. We have held some heart-warming face to face interactions that demonstrated beauty that can form online. We now shift our focus towards the future and building a network that will be impactful and work in the space that many are fearful to work.

Our session at SPA will be focused on creating awareness around the network and what is offered through it to those who have a lived experience and to those who work in the space of preventing suicide or creating social change. Some of what the network is focused on delivering:

  1. Over the fence conversations (Podcast – with the network able to join the conversations and interact)
  2. The network will release quarterly newsletters
  3. The network will aim to provide capacity building workshops
  4. The network will be a place to promote paid and volunteer opportunities for the men in the network.
  5. Opportunities to be involved in creating resources.
  6. Provide insight into Commonwealth, State and Territory
  7. Those in the network will have an opportunity to join the online safe space as a potential future 'host' and access to the training
  8. Members who wish to get involved in being future leaders or future 'men' in the world of suicide prevention - we the network will support them
