Empowering peer workers: innovative strategies in suicide prevention training (#127)

Traditionally, suicide prevention peer worker training has been heavily classroom-based, focused on time spent and modules completed. This conventional approach often fails to address the real-world challenges faced by peer workers, who regularly encounter high-stress and traumatic situations at work. Consequently, workers frequently enter training sessions already experiencing distress and burnout. They do not have the mental capacity to absorb hours of emotionally heavy content inherent in suicide prevention training. Recognising this disconnect of out-dated training models, our lived-experience team, comprised of suicide prevention peer workers and mentors, have developed a new training model designed to better support and engage participants.

Our approach integrates principles of gamification to create a training environment that prioritises emotional regulation and engagement. By incorporating games and puzzles, we target the brain’s frontal cortex, which helps to alleviate the stress responses associated with trauma and refocus participants on learning. This method fosters a more interactive and less distressing experience, making the training more effective and engaging.

A core element of our approach is the role of facilitators skilled in creating authentic, supportive environments. Rather than adhering to a rigid curriculum, facilitators focus on building connection and trust within the group. Sessions start with informal catch-ups and playful discussions to help participants feel comfortable and safe. This foundation allows facilitators to identify and leverage moments of shared connection, such as light-hearted content relevant to the group, like popular memes or viral trends.

By adapting to the unique needs and dynamics of each group, facilitators can respond to the energy in the room and modify their approach accordingly. This flexible, non-linear method mirrors the grassroots, hands-on nature of peer work, reflecting a commitment to addressing the immediate needs of participants in a genuine and responsive manner.

As we move "Together Towards Tomorrow," this innovative training model exemplifies how unity and creativity can transform challenges into opportunities. By embracing resilience and collective action through our peer worker training, we are better equipping the workforce responsible for supporting those through suicidal crisis and bereavement. Our goal is to advance solutions in suicide prevention, working collaboratively towards a future where fewer lives are lost and more individuals are supported effectively.
