Are you delivering inclusive services? Practical strategies for LGBTIQ+ inclusive Suicide Prevention Services (#3)

  1. LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Research shows that LGBTIQ+ communities have disproportionately higher rates of mental ill-health and suicidality than their peers, with direct correlation with their experiences of marginalisation.  Many LGBTIQ+ individuals delay or avoid seeking help around their mental health and suicidality, even during crisis, due to social determinants including experiences of marginalisation. If they do seek help, the support often falls short on meeting their specific needs even if it is well intended.

Our interactive, 3-hour Workshop will provide attendees with practical strategies to address the challenge and opportunity of embedding inclusive practices in their workplaces.

Our Presenter will answer these questions:

  • How can current and planned Suicide Prevention Services ensure they are inclusive of LGBTIQ+ people of lived and living experience and meeting the specific needs of the different LGBTIQ+ populations?
  • What support is available to the Suicide Prevention workforce as they navigate embedding inclusive practices in their workplaces?

Using a small group problem-solving format, participants will:

  • identify unintentional and inadvertent barriers to help seeking within their Services and why a “one-size fits all” approach won’t work!
  • develop practical strategies for creating inclusive Services that meet the diverse needs of LGBTIQ+ communities
  • use practical techniques to prioritise and centre the voices of lived and living experience within the LGBTIQ+ communities in suicide prevention, mental health and wellbeing

Participants will receive a number of resources to assist them.
